Apanui is a well
resourced, decile 5, primary school with approximately 375 students
in August 2011. The school is the closest to the Whakatane CBD.
Currently there are 16 classrooms from
New Entrants to Year 6,
including three level 2 Maori Immersion classes. The immersion classes
are classified as Year 0 - 2, Year 3 - 4, Year 5 -6.

As well, the National
Health School Has a base at Apanui with three teachers.
The Dental Clinic has
closed and the school is now serviced by mobile units.

Currently the Board of
Trustees is negotiating with Ngati Awa and Te Whare Wanganga o Awanuiarangi
to relocate the historic Apanui Infant Building to the school site.
It is hoped the building will be on site by the end of October 2011.
Free buses
provide transport to and from Apanui for children from Coastlands and
other outlying areas.
